The Knights of Columbus Supreme Council continued its annual charitable-giving efforts in 2022 through donations that serve the most vulnerable populations in New Haven and the surrounding area. This year, the Knights of Columbus donated a total of $100,000 to 18 local charities, including homeless shelters, soup kitchens and food pantries, assisted living and senior care centers.

“Charitable work has always been at the heart of our mission, since Blessed Michael McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus 140 years ago at New Haven’s St. Mary’s Church,” said Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly. “The Knights of Columbus and our charitable impact now extend internationally, but New Haven will always be our home. We are proud to continue our support for the charitable organizations that serve our neighbors in need.”

In response to growing food insecurities across Connecticut in 2022, the Knights of Columbus donated $25,000 to Connecticut Foodshare and $10,000 to Little Sisters of the Poor, who care for the elderly poor.

Among the organizations receiving charitable donations are: Christ the Bread of Life, St. Luke’s Lunch for Women & Children, St. Thomas More Soup Kitchen, Life Haven, Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry, Columbus House, Connecticut Hospice Inc., Farnam Neighborhood House, Community Soup Kitchen, The Salvation Army, Immanuel Missionary Baptist Church, Christian Community Action, A Place to Nourish Your Health (APNH), Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen, Community Dining Room, and the Mary Wade Home.

For the 13th consecutive year, Knights of Columbus councils held the Knights’ signature Coats for Kids distribution on Black Friday, Nov. 25, handing out thousands of winter coats at sites across the nation. Since the program’s introduction, 8,000 councils throughout the United States and Canada have provided more than 949,000 coats to children in need. In addition, on Giving Tuesday, Nov. 29, councils collected more than $812,000 in donations, which will be used to secure over 40,800 coats to distribute to children in need next winter.

Additionally, the Knights of Columbus partners with several organizations to strengthen its charitable efforts, including Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity, American Wheelchair Mission, Gary Sinise Foundation and Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA).
